THE PERFECT HOST Review

THE PERFECT HOST is a clever little thriller. John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) has just robbed a bank and injured his foot during the escape. He manages to con his way into the house of Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Pierce). As it turns out, however, Wilson is not quite the defenceless host that he appears to be, and Taylor soon finds himself struggling in his attempts to overpower and outwit Wilson.

The film is Australian director and screenwriter Nick Tomnay's feature film debut. Mostly taking place in Wilson's house, the film works thanks to Tomnay's slick direction and his cast's superb acting. Clayne Crawford gives a decent performance, but is perhaps not menacing enough in his portrayal of the bank robber. He is easily outshone by David Hyde Pierce, whose performance as the house owner is best described as manic. Pierce literally goes nuts with his role and is just so much fun to watch.

The film begins to get really interesting when viewers discover that Warwick is a bit of a madman, but it does get tired in the middle act as the recurrent plots become repetitive. Also, the many flashback scenes do not add much to the film and are rather distracting. Fortunately, the filmmakers have saved some of the biggest twists for the final 15-20 minutes of the movie, which despite requiring a certain degree of suspension of disbelief, offer a nice change in the direction of the narrative and lead to an ending that pretty neatly ties everything together.

Overall, THE PERFECT HOST is a witty, darkly comic and enjoyable film, with David Hyde Pierce's brilliant performance alone being worth the price of admission.

Stephenie Meyer's The Host Movie Gets A Release Date!

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s has another novel that will be turned into a movie. Titled The Host, Meyer’s will see her fictitious character Melanie, who’s body is being used as a vessel by an alien named Wanderer, hit the big screen on March 29, 2013.

I attempted to read the book (what feels like ages ago) but I couldn’t finish the story. It’s no Twilight, and yes I’m a fan, but maybe I’ll give Melanie Stryder and her story as one of the last humans another attempt. I can only imagine the buzz that will surround Meyer’s next flick, and since it’ll probably get underway shortly after this summer, with the final conclusion of Breaking Dawn, and plenty of news headed our way about The Host in months to come, Meyer’s followers should be content for the next two years. That doesn’t mean we aren’t waiting for her next big novel to arrive on shelves!

The Host was released back in 2008 and will be adapted for the silver screen by Andrew Niccol, who will also direct the production. Actress Saoirse Ronan is already on board to play Melanie. And although I like the young performer, the lead just seems like a perfect fit for Amanda Seyfried. Principal photography will kick off this coming February 2012 around Louisiana and New Mexico. Additional casting should be making headlines any day now. Stay tuned for updates!

David Hyde Pierce stars in 'The Perfect Host,' but doesn't like to be one in his New York apartment

Contrary to the name of his latest movie, "The Perfect Host" (arriving Friday), David Hyde Pierce does not often invite large groups of friends over to his upper West Side apartment.

"My partner and I are much more low-key," says the 52-year-old actor, best known for his role as Dr. Niles Crane in the sitcom "Frasier." "Sure, we'll have a friend over sometimes, but I wouldn't call those dinner parties. They are not fancy."

On the other hand, Warwick Wilson, Pierce's squirrelly character in his latest film, is the consummate host. In anticipation of his guests' arrival, he sets an immaculate table and expertly chops vegetables, something that Pierce had to practice.

"I'm not a good cook, so I had to really work on my knife work," he says. "But that's why I liked this character. He goes in so many different directions, and complicated is always more fun to play."

Of course, Pierce has had bad luck with New York dinner parties in the past.

When he first moved to the city in 1981, he was invited to a friend's apartment in Morningside Heights for an evening get-together, but took the wrong train and exited at 125th St. and Malcom X Blvd.

"When I got off the train, there was literally a car on fire in the street and I was just so impressed that my friends would live in this type of neighborhood," he recalls. "A gang of kids pushed me down a stairwell and took my wallet and the bottle of wine that I was carrying.

"But what they really wanted was the drugs because that was the only conceivable reason that a guy like me would be in that neighborhood."

After nearly three decades splitting time between Los Angeles and New York City, Pierce does not make such geographical mistakes anymore. Not that he would have the same problems if he did.

According to the actor, "When I first moved here, the city was a disgusting mess, but I loved it. There was crap all over the streets and Times Square was full of hookers and degenerates and drug addicts, but there was opportunity.

"Now the city has been cleaned up. You can walk to the theater district from the upper West Side and it is clean and beautiful."

These days, Pierce, who has won four Emmys and a Tony Award, is very busy.

Not only does he star in "The Perfect Host," which allows him to show off his chops as a complex character actor, but he is making his directorial debut in October with the musical comedy "It Shoulda Been You" at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J.

Pierce is the first to admit that not all actors make good directors, but he believes his case is unique.

"One reason I might be okay at directing is that as an actor I tend to be very aware of the entire picture, the context of everything that everyone is doing and how every role fits in," he says. "Of course, I'm not far enough along yet to realize my mistakes."

Needless to say, Pierce has come a long way since his days as a young actor and seasonal necktie salesman for Bloomingdale's.

"When I first arrived in New York in 1981, I decided that I would stay as long as the pleasure of being an actor outweighed the pain," he says. "So far, so good."

Exclusive: David Hyde Pierce Talks The Perfect Host

In writer/director Nick Tomnay’s feature film debut The Perfect Host, actor David Hyde Pierce portrays Warwick Wilson, a consummate perfectionist who’s preparing for a lavish dinner party that ends up being crashed by a wounded bank robber (Clayne Crawford) on the run.

However, we soon realize that there is a lot more to Warwick than just a mild-mannered dinner host, and a devilishly demented game of cat and mouse begins between these two strangers that wields some surprising twists and turns for audiences along the way.

Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Pierce about his shocking new role, what attracted him to the indie project and his experiences in bringing the twisted sociopath Warwick to life.

For most of his career on the big and small screens, Pierce has been known as the lovably awkward Niles Crane on the hit NBC comedy “Frasier.” And even though his character in The Perfect Host (review here) may be perceived initially by viewers as very Niles-esque, Pierce discussed how Warwick was actually a complete 180 from the sitcom character he played for a remarkable 11 years.

“My manager brought me Nick’s script and his short film The Host, and I really loved both of them,” said Pierce. “The script was just so incredibly smart and funny and disturbing that I knew this was going to be an amazing experience for me to play this kind of a character. But before I signed on, I contemplated what I could bring to the table with this role because I didn’t want to do it if I didn’t think I could bring something unique because someone like Warwick has so many intricacies to him.”

“Nick wrote an amazing script that was multi-layered, which is a feast for any actor to be able to work with. It could have been so easy to make every character in this movie one-dimensional, but Nick found a way to give everyone a lot of depth and it never comes off cliché either,” added Pierce.

The acclaimed actor discussed how he approached fleshing out the character of Warwick so that his performance never came off as too cartoonish to audiences. “It definitely was a challenge to play a guy like Warwick, but that challenge is what attracted me to the project in the first place. Sometimes as an actor you run into situations when you’re playing extreme characters like this and it’s written in a way where the director may want to try and ‘fix’ the character or even make them more sympathetic than they really are. I certainly didn’t want to do that in The Perfect Host because there’s nothing redeeming about who Warwick is.”

Pierce added, “I think when you watch the movie you get the sense that there’s something desperate about Warwick’s nature but he has found ways to express it much differently than we would all express it. I mean, most of us would never just kidnap someone for the fun of it but he would. That’s in Warwick’s nature so you need that humanity to balance out the extreme side of his behavior.”
